Last month, we told you that ratings on the NBA networks, ESPN and TNT, were down as compared to last season. Well, just less than a month later, ESPN has some good news, that its viewership on TV and online is up through January 5.

In a gleeful press released issued last week, ESPN notes that its viewership on television is up four percent from the 2014-15 season through 30 games (2.351 million viewers in ’15-’16 vs. 2.257 million last season).

Online, games viewed through the WatchESPN app are averaging 152,000 unique visitors per game and that’s up 61% from last season’s 95,000.

ESPN also has some bullet points it wants you to know about this season thus far:

  • NBA on ESPN season-opening doubleheader up 24 percent;
  • Cleveland Cavaliers-Golden State Warriors is the third-most watched Christmas Day game ever on ABC;
  • Most-watched ESPN Christmas Day prime-time doubleheader;
  • San Antonio Spurs-Houston Rockets is third most-watched Christmas Day game ever on ESPN;
  • Top six most-watched NBA games on WatchESPN have come this season.

The 30 games include ESPN’s 1st 28 games and ABC’s Christmas Day doubleheader.

With ESPN about to begin a new Saturday primetime package of games on ABC, the Worldwide Leader has plenty of reason for optimism that it will continue to reap the benefits of having the rights to the Association.

So ESPN is pleased right now and looks forward to more viewership increases as the season continues.
