Joe Strauss was a ballwriter's ballwriter: brilliant on deadline, curmudgeonly as hell, had his vices, loved his family. Miss him already.

Early in my career, I unknowingly put my laptop bag on Joe Strauss' seat. When I returned, it was in the garbage can. That guy was the best.

My favorite Joe Strauss lead, from night Cal Ripken took himself out of lineup: "The Streak died last night of natural causes. It was 2,632"
