You know something is big when it gets parodied, as with the legend of Kurt Cobain realizing Nirvana had “made it” when Weird Al wanted to do a version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Given the way Don Cherry has gone after him over the years, there may not be quite the same level of reverence in Montreal Canadiens’ star P.K. Subban’s Cherry imitation, but it’s a spot-on one that shows just how recognizable and replicable Cherry is:
Subban’s suit is eye-blindingly appropriate, and probably could slide into Cherry’s wardrobe easily, but it’s the subtle Cherry tics he particularly nails, such as “Now look at this,” “You do this,” “Back in the day,” and the repetition. The Dave Semenko reference is perfect, too. If anything, the best measurement of this may be the way Subban cracks up anchor George Stroumboulopoulos, who has to leave his chair because he’s laughing so hard. And hey, Don loves it. Subban’s just 26, so he should have lots of hockey ahead of him, but if anyone out there is looking for a Cherry impersonator, you might want to hit Subban up…
