Harry Caray

The SI Vault Twitter account, curated by Sports Illustrated‘s Andy Gray, is a great source for old sports photos, but as with all media outlets, it sometimes includes errors. Tuesday’s was especially notable, though, given the previous mistakes ESPN and CBS have made in overlooking the White Sox in coverage of the Cubs’ championship drought. Gray went on a quest for “the best Cubs photo I could find,” and came up with one of legendary broadcaster Harry Caray. The only problem? It was from Caray’s days as a broadcaster for the White Sox (where he spent 11 years before moving to the Cubs), as many Twitter respondents soon pointed out (the “Sox” hats in the background help give it away):

To Gray and SI’s credit, though, they didn’t delete the tweet, and Gray instead cleverly apologized and then retweeted some of the funniest criticisms he received:

Here are some of the tweets Gray then retweeted from the @SI_Vault account:

And he then came up with an actual Cubs’ photo that’s pretty great:

Everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone handles them well. We’ve now seen a good apology from ESPN and one that’s both sincere and clever from SI, though, and both of those should make White Sox fans feel a little better about being overlooked. Warning to the rest of the media, though; please don’t forget about the White Sox.
