We haven’t heard too much kvetching from Bob Costas during the 2016 Summer Olympics. It’s been mostly smooth sailing as he’s had plenty of gymnastics, swimming and beach volleyball to introduce during the NBC Olympics primetime show in the first week. And without any signs of pink eye or any other potential malady that could ail him, Costas hasn’t had too many complaints. Well, that was until the end of Friday night’s show when he was interviewing swimmer Katie Ledecky following her stunning win in the 800 meter freestyle event.
As Bob was wrapping up the interview and showing Ledecky’s medal ceremony, a producer apparently reminded Costas to promote the late night show hosted by reality TV show mogul Ryan Seacrest and you can see the result below:
As you could hear from the consternation in Bob’s voice, he would have rather have ended with the medal ceremony rather than promote Seacrest, but those pesky network promos got in the way. And perhaps Bob would have been just as irritable had he had to promote Mary Carillo who previously hosted Olympic late night, but judging from back in 2014 when Costas shared a shot with her, perhaps not.
With another week-plus to go for the Rio Olympics, maybe we’ll see another moment when Bob begrudgingly promotes Ryan Seacrest. There will certainly be plenty of opportunities between now and the Closing Ceremony.
