What a life Michael Kay leads – he hosts a successful radio program in New York City and is the play by play voice of the New York Yankees, yet even the most innocuous quotes can get New York sports fans in a furor.
On Thursday, ESPN’s Adam Rubin (a beat writer for the Mets), tweeted out a quote from Kay’s show about his lack of desire to call Mets games.
Michael Kay on ESPN New York 98.7 said on air that he'd call Yankees for $1 over #Mets for $1 million. "First of all, Mets fans despise me."

Naturally, Kay was attacked on Twitter by Mets fans and Mike Francesa fans. You can imagine what was said to him.
On Friday morning, a perturbed Kay responded to Rubin’s tweet.
I can't thank @AdamRubinESPN enough 4 his foolish tweet about something jokingly said on TMKS. No context whatsoever. Weak & irresponsible.

His tabloid-y tweet has brought the trolls out for no reason. Out of their basement carrying torches with no idea what was really said.

Thanks again @AdamRubinESPN. Can't thank you enough.

A basement joke? Hell yeah! At least Kay didn’t go with the *mom’s* basement line.
All in all, this is mild, considering what we’ve seen New York sports radio devolve into. It’s a shame Francesa didn’t get involved… though I actually think he might agree with Kay on the choice between calling the Yankees or calling the Mets.
