After Syracuse lost to Michigan Saturday night, Jim Boeheim snapped at CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyel in the post-game press conference and, well, the exchange was interesting.
For what it's worth, Doyel admitted the question of whether or not Boeheim was returning next year didn't need to be asked first. (Boeheim also later apologized to Doyel.) That being said, this is not the first time Boeheim has had it out with a sportswriter – if you will recall, he called ESPN's Andy Katz an "idiot" and "disloyal" earlier this season. It turned out that Boeheim was angry at Katz for questioning him about the Bernie Fine investigation. Why is that relevant? I'm glad you asked!
Immediately after the Fine story broke, Doyel wrote that Boeheim should lose his job over comments he made about the accusers.
So, does Boeheim have it in for anyone who covered the Fine story? Or was he just pissed off after a devastating loss and unleashed his wrath to the first person available?
What I took out of the exchange, honestly, was that it was real. So many of these press conferences now are formulaic. The coach comes in and sits down. If his team won, the first thing he says is how well the other team played. If his team lost, the first thing he says is how they lost to a tremendous program. Then he answeres boilerplate questions and everyone moves on with their day. Boeheim has a history of being a jerk to writers, but at least he's honest and open about it.
