Former champion boxer turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya revealed an unusual inspiration for putting together his next major fight card.

Donald Trump.

The frontrunner for the Republican nomination for the presidency and wall-enthusiast has espoused some of the most extreme views ever seen on the national stage.  And in matching up young superstars Canelo Alvarez versus Muslim Amir Khan for a fight on May 7th in Las Vegas, De La Hoya couldn’t help but note the message it would send to Trump.

Via CNN:

“I was watching Donald Trump speaking his nonsense, and I said to myself: ‘Why don’t I put a Muslim fighter and a Mexican fighter in the same ring and create a mega mega event on Cinco de Mayo week, just to show Trump.’”

“I thank Trump for giving me the inspiration to come up with this mega event — because we’re going to have millions of Muslims, millions of Mexicans, buying pay-per-view, and watching the fight live from Las Vegas.”

Alvarez (46-1-1) vs Khan (31-3) will be the first major fight to take place in the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, before the UFC 200 PPV is scheduled to take place there in July.

Odds are that at some point in the lead-up to the fight there will be an uncomfortable moment when Trump brags about the size of his hands compared to De La Hoya.
