A controversial Gold Cup is in the books, and the Final between Jamaica and Mexico did some monster viewership numbers thanks to the Univision broadcasts.

On Fox Sports 1, the match drew just 818,000 viewers, a drop of 66% from coverage on the Fox broadcast network two years ago for the US-Panama Final. But when you add in the viewership numbers from Univision and Univision Deportes, total viewership rises all the way to 6.529 million, a 39% jump from the Fox and Univision coverage from two years ago (4.7 million).

The third place game between the US and Panama was shuffled over to Fox Sports 2 because of MLB coverage on Fox Sports 1 and the Barcelona-Manchester United International Champions Cup friendly on Fox. As a result, viewership tanked for the match – the English coverage on Fox Sports 2 drew just 290,000 viewers, and the Spanish coverage on Univision Deportes added another 351,000, giving the match a total of 641,000 viewers.

While the Final was up overall, it ends with a whimper for Fox. Throughout the group stage, Fox Sports 1 set viewership records for the US’s matches with Honduras, Haiti, and Panama, while the Cuba match on Fox broadcast also did well. The US-Jamaica semifinal on Fox Sports 1 broke the same viewership record set by the three group stage games, while the Mexico-Panama semifinal was up 29% overall on Univision, Univision Deportes, and Fox Sports 2.

If Fox had gotten the US-Mexico matchup they craved, they would have likely ended up with yet another ratings record for the network, and would have likely surpassed the nine million total viewer mark when combined with Univision. Instead, Fox will only have to be happy with their solid viewership numbers for the group stage, quarterfinal, and semifinal matches.
