The Marshall Thundering Herd is 7-0, ranked in the top 25, and they want to head to the College Football Playoff. Conference USA is backing the school (because naturally, the more exposure for Marshall means the conference gets more money), and has hired a PR firm that worked for the Rose Bowl, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Speedo to help bolster the Herd’s case.

Brener Zwikel & Associates will be hyping up the team’s three prior undefeated seasons and stud quarterback Rakeem Cato, begging and pleading the playoff committee for consideration.

If Marshall finishes the season unbeaten and finishes their year by knocking off a team in the C-USA Championship Game, they’d have a great shot at breaking through into one of the four non-semifinal games. The highest-ranked team in the so-called “gang of five” will earn an automatic berth, and Marshall’s only main competition for that spot is a 6-1 East Carolina team that has knocked off both Virginia Tech and North Carolina this season while coasting to an early 3-0 record in the American.

But really, the PR firm won’t do a lot. If Marshall just wins out and finishes 13-0, it’s going to be very difficult for the committee to overlook them for a spot in a marquee bowl this January. However, let’s be honest – Marshall could finish 13-0 and every other team in the country could have at least two losses, and there’s no chance in hell that they’d be in the semifinals.
