Bob Costas has always been a pretty good late night TV guest. He’s quick-witted and pretty much game for anything. It isn’t on YouTube, but an episode of the old Late Night show with Conan O’Brien where the show did a meta version of an episode as a baseball game, with Costas providing the play-by-play particularly strikes me as a highlight.

So no surprise that Rapping Roberto was entertaining in his first appearance on the Seth Meyers edition of Late Night. He wasn’t exactly entertaining in a funny way. Instead, Costas doubled down on his opinions about athlete gun culture and vehemently defended his ability to give his opinions during sports broadcasts.

Whether you agree with Costas or not, you must admire his conviction in his opinions. It will be interesting to tune into Sunday Night Football this upcoming season. If this interview is to be believed, Bob certainly won’t shy away from any touchy subjects.

In a lighter moment, Costas poked light fun at Seth’s much-maligned, minimalist set by adding the Stanley Cup to it.

I personally love the flimsiest of pretexts that got the Stanley Cup on stage. Despite becoming a much more polarizing figure lately, Costas remains an engaging presence in sports broadcasting. I don’t think the viewer would want him to become a more neutered speaker now, because it just wouldn’t seem honest.
