When it comes to homer announcers, usually Hawk Harrelson always resides at the top of the list. But legendary Boston Celtics player, coach, and broadcaster Tommy Heinsohn can’t be far behind.
I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Heinsohn – whether it be his use of “Tommy Points” or his unending love of Walter McCarty or the fact that I found myself watching a lot of Celtics games as I became more of an NBA fan at the turn of the century.
But Heinsohn’s style is not for everybody. And it’s been in existence since his earliest days as a broadcaster.
Back in 1967, Bob Ryan wrote this scathing review of Heinsohn’s commentary that still might be applicable today. The passage is quoted in Ryan’s book Scribe: My Life in Sports.

47 years later, it’s clear that Heinsohn is still a Celtics fanatic at heart with a microphone, which is why so many love him… or hate him as a broadcaster.
