In addition to his work at HBO, MLB Network and of course, NBC, Bob Costas is known to be one of the many distinguished alumni of Syracuse University and in particular, the Newhouse School of Public Communication where noted sportscasters Marv Albert, Ian Eagle, Sean McDonough, Beth Mowins, Dave Pasch, Dick Stockton, Mike Tirico and thousands of others have graduated.

It appears that Syracuse has appreciated the contributions Bob has made to the school through his yearly visits and talks to students plus working with aspiring sportscasters. The school will bestow an Honorary Doctorate of Letters to Costas during this year’s commencement exercises at the iconic Carrier Dome on May 10.

It’s another honor for a man who has won numerous Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Studio Host (and is nominated in the category again this year). And this isn’t the first time Syracuse has cited Costas. In 2001, he was given the George Arents Award for excellence in sports broadcasting. And just last year, Costas received the first Marty Glickman Award for Excellence in Sports Media.

So as of May 10, Costas can be called “Dr. Bob” and it certainly has a better ring than “Dr. Oz,” but not quite as distinguished as “Doc Emrick” who has an actual Ph.D. from Bowling Green University (hence the “Doc” nickname).
