The Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 90-86 on Saturday, but the outcome was secondary to a series of questionable calls that led to technical fouls and a potential suspension.
Things got chippy early when Chicago’s DiJonai Carrington was assessed a flagrant 2 and ejected following a hard foul across the face area of the Fever’s Sophie Cunningham during the first quarter. The foul had originally been assessed as a flagrant 1 but was upgraded upon review.
Ensuring the conversation would continue around that call, Carrington returned to the locker room and posted on her Threads account: “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever.” She later posted “8/23″ on X, which is the date of the next Fever-Sky game.
Perhaps even more notable was a technical foul call on Caitlin Clark, which could lead to a one-game suspension for the Fever star. The play in question occurred with 1:06 remaining in the third quarter, when Clark appeared to lose control of the ball after Sky guard Natasha Cloud bumped her under the basket. That sent Clark out of bounds into an official standing at the baseline. While it seemed obvious that Clark was not intentional in bumping the ref, the official T’d her up.

As that’s Clark’s eighth technical foul of the season, it garners an automatic one-game suspension, presuming the league doesn’t rescind the call.
Following the technical foul call, Indiana head coach Stephanie White picked up a technical foul as well for arguing on Clark’s behalf. After the game, White explained why she got T’d up with some colorful language.

“My tech was for saying that’s bullsh*t, even though I heard the F-bomb the whole f*cking game,” White said after the game. “My tech was for saying that’s bullsh*t. Like, that’s a bad call. That’s a bad call. Incidental contact when you’re flying out of control… And I thought her teammates should have come up and talked to her about that as well. I think that’s really bad.
“That sh*t happens all the time in the game. You know, officials have to have some awareness in those moments, and it didn’t happen.”
As for Clark, she says she’s already looked at the tape and feels confident that the foul will be rescinded, even going as far as to tell ESPN’s Holly Rowe she’ll see her next Tuesday at the Fever’s next game against the New York Liberty.

“She said I ran into her. I’ve already watched it on the tape. So, we’ll let the league decide, but it wasn’t intentional or anything,” said Clark. “So I’m hoping it’s getting rescinded, Holly.
“I’ll see you on Tuesday.”
The Fever have already appealed Clark’s technical foul. Now we’ll see how the WNBA responds. (UPDATE: The technical foul has been rescinded, nullifying the one-game suspension.)
