Before she was a three-time national championship-winning college basketball coach, Dawn Staley was one of the greatest players in WNBA history. And while the recent uptick in commentary on the league doesn’t bother her, Staley does have one request for the people giving those opinions.

Watch the games.

Staley shared that message on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday night, wanting those commenting to have a better understanding of the league in general.

“Hope all the ‘just talking heads’ are tuned into @WNBA games tonite and tomorrow and the next nite and so on…..so they can equip themselves with a deeper sense of this league,” Staley tweeted. “And all of these opinions are great but let it come from watching the entire league.”

As was the case when she was playing at Iowa, a lot of attention has focused on Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. A lot of the people watching are people who did not watch much (if any) women’s basketball in the past. That talk has been particularly amplified in recent days following a hard foul from Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter against Clark.

Naturally, as more people watch the league, more opinions on it will follow. Those will come from fans and talking heads alike. Certainly, there’s no disputing Staley’s point.

Asking people to be informed on a subject they’re going to give opinions on is a reasonable request.
