The defending champion Las Vegas Aces ended the Indiana Fever’s season on Thursday night with a 94-83 Game 3 win in their WNBA Playoff series.
After the game, Aces head coach Becky Hammon was asked if Indiana’s Big Three (Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell) remind her of Kelsey Plum, A’ja Wilson, and Jackie Young, the trio of first-overall picks that led Las Vegas to two WNBA championships together (with Wilson and Young adding a third).
Hammon’s response was blunt and decisive, and it made Wilson, who was sitting next to her, lose it.
“Coach, when you took over the Aces, they had like that original trio of number 1 overall picks back-to-back,” started a reporter. “And that’s kind of like what the Fever have on the court right now. I know you’re focused on your team, but having gone against the Fever in back-to-back postseasons, do you kind of see parallels between the Fever and then the team that you took over back in, you know, those years ago?”
“No,” replied a stone-faced Hammon, causing Wilson to guffaw.

“Please give me a question I can say no to,” added Wilson.
To be fair, the way the question was framed, it got the response it deserved. All due credit to the talented players on the Fever, but they have yet to make it out of the first round of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Plum, Wilson, and Young won two championships together before Plum left for Los Angeles.
The reporter later explained they meant it in terms of potential, but Hammon replied that wasn’t what she was asked.
“I think that team has great potential though, to answer your question,” she added. “But it’s different.”
The Aces now move on to the WNBA Playoff semifinals, where they await the winner of the Valkyries-Wings series.
