Chris “Mad Dog” Russo is no stranger to engaging in debates that seem to offer no clear winner. That seems to make him a perfect fit as the host of Vice Sports’ upcoming special, Brady vs. Belichick: The Verdict.
The show’s title sets the premise. The New England Patriots won six Super Bowls in 17 years between 2002-2019, but the dynasty stirred great debate among NFL fans. In short, who deserved more of the credit for the Patriots’ success, Brady or Belichick?
Vice Sports’ three-part special will do a deep-dive on that topic. According to BarrettMedia.com, former players and current NFL analysts Rob Gronkowski, Matt Cassel, Devin McCourty, Rodney Harrison and Carl Banks will offer their thoughts. Media personalities such as Peter King, Bob Costas, Dan Shaughnessy, Mike Greenberg and Michelle Beadle will also weigh in.
After everyone has offered their opinions, Russo will act as judge and render a verdict.
The first show will air on Vice TV on Jan. 21 at 10 p.m. (EST), followed by episodes on the subsequent two Tuesday nights. The trailer looks interesting.
“The ultimate coach and quarterback tandem in NFL history?,” Russo said in a statement (via Barrett Sports Media). “Halas and Luckman? Lombardi and Starr? Walsh and Montana? No doubt it’s Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Two GOATs. But who was more integral to the New England Patriots’ two decades of unparalleled success? That’s the great unanswered question we argue, debate, and resolve on Brady vs. Belichick: The Verdict!”
Brady confirmed last year in The Dynasty: New England Patriots docuseries on Apple TV+ that he left the Patriots after the 2019 season because his relationship with Belichick had deteriorated. Yet he also wrote a tribute to Belichick after the coach parted ways with the Patriots, saying, “I could never have been the player I was without you Coach Belichick. I am forever grateful.”
