When a player or coach leaves a team, it’s not uncommon for the team to post a fond farewell to the person on social media. But while it’s not uncommon, it’s far from a requirement.

The New York Jets learned on Tuesday that a nice goodbye message won’t always be taken in a great way.

New York took quarterback Zach Wilson with the No. 2 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. His tenure with the team did not go well. After two frustrating seasons, the Jets seemingly moved on from Wilson, signing Aaron Rodgers. But Rodgers’ injury in Week 1 of the 2023 season gave Wilson one more chance. It didn’t work out. On Monday, the experiment officially came to an end when the Jets traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos.

On Tuesday, the Jets shared a farewell message to Wilson on Twitter/X with the caption, “Thank you, Zach Wilson” along with a photo, sharing the same message.

We’ll say this for the Jets — or whoever is running the Twitter/X feed — their hearts were in the right place here. That said, judging by the reactions, this particular message might have been better off coming at a later date, if at all.
