When a show that normally takes place in a studio goes on location, unique challenges might arise. While in studio, everyone there goes to great lengths to be sure that everyone’s attention is on the show, that’s not the case on the road — particularly in a place like an arena.
That’s the exact obstacle that TNT’s Inside the NBA crew faced on Wednesday.
The show took place not from the studio, but from inside Minneapolis’ Target Center, where the Minnesota Timberwolves were hosting the Dallas Mavericks for Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
At halftime, Inside the NBA attempted to break down what happened in the first half of the game. That was for people watching the game on television. For the people in the arena, the halftime show was Montell Jordan, performing his 1995 hit, “This is How We Do It” with some lyrics tweaked to give it a Timberwolves theme.
Ernie Johnson joked that he’d have to read the lips of Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Draymond Green. Green did some dancing in his chair while Shaq repeated the song’s reprise, even singing it the third time. Eventually, they refocused and detailed the first-half performances of Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels and Kyle Anderson, as well as the Mavericks other than Luka Donฤiฤ and Kyrie Irving.
