Getting a media credential for Super Bowl week seems easier than ever.

If you’re a fired radio host trying to troll Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes over officiating or perhaps asking Jalen Hurts how to replicate his handsome looks, the NFL is more than happy to oblige. It’s entertaining, sure, but it’s also become a bit of a free-for-all where anything goes — including asking Taylor Swift’s boyfriend if he has any Kanye West on his pregame playlist.

But one moment from this year’s Super Bowl media day really took things to another level. An unidentified media member asked Eagles rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell how he had “grown” since the last Super Bowl. The question would have been harmless enough… if Mitchell hadn’t still been a junior at Toledo, taking Gen Eds at the time of the 2023 Super Bowl.

Mitchell was visibly confused. His jaw dropped as he tried to process a question so factually off-base that even a quick Google search would have rendered it laughable. Yet, here he was, being asked to reflect on his nonexistent Super Bowl experience from a couple of years earlier.

“You said the last Super Bowl?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Uh, I mean, I wasn’t here, so…”

Insane, right?

But it appears this was just an attempt to go viral. Joe Bonham (@joebonham on TikTok) uploaded the video to his page with the caption, “CLUELESS reporter asks Quinyon Mitchell about his last Super Bowl… it’s his first SB.”

@joebonham It’s his first Super Bowl… #nfl #eagles #quinyonmitchell #superbowl #nola #xyzbca ♬ original sound – Joe Bonham

Awful Announcing has learned that a TikTok influencer/content creator was the person who asked the question, and he later claimed that he did it for views.

So, you can reasonably conclude that Bonham was asking said question. A quick scan of his TikTok will show an archived posts folder dedicated to Super Bowl media day. One of those clips features an unknown female reporter asking Christian McCaffrey in February 2024 about his “last” Super Bowl, pretty much in the same vain that Mitchell was asked.

@joebonham Awkward. A reporter didnt know CMC wasn’t on the team 4 years ago #nfl #49ers #superbowl #lasvegas ♬ original sound – Joe Bonham

So, pretty much, this looks like an attempt to go viral off sheer absurdity.

And it seems to be working.
