This is why politicians should not schedule sports tweets or at least have their staffers make sure until the game is truly over. The junior U.S. Senator from Iowa, Joni Ernst sent out a tweet congratulating the Iowa Hawkeyes on winning the Big Ten Championship. Unfortunately for Senator Ernst and Iowa, the Michigan State Spartans won. Ernst or someone from her staff deleted the tweet, but in this day and age, there’s always the screengrab:

So the moral of the story is politicians shouldn’t tweet about sports, unless they really make sure it’s correct.
UPDATE: Senator Ernst sent out a tweet in the wee hours of the morning apologizing for the “staff error”:
