With the nation celebrating Martin Luther King Day today and paying tribute to one of the most influential men who ever lived, SI’s Richard Deitsch asked this question.

The answer: you bet.

Whoever is running the Seattle Seahawks sent this tweet with a quote from Dr. King and a picture from an emotional Russell Wilson from yesterday’s game.  While that’s not particularly offensive, it also included the the civil rights anthem “we shall overcome.”  Because you can’t fully celebrate your team’s comeback victory in the NFC Championship Game without comparing it to the struggle for civil rights.

The tweet was quickly deleted, but as with other prominent social media fails nothing stays deleted on Twitter.  Perhaps some day we’ll learn that we can enjoy sports without trying to equate them with historical movement that changed the fabric of society.
