The CW will officially nab two more bowl games to add to its growing college football portfolio.
Nexstar Media Group, the parent company of The CW, announced on Thursday that the network has secured broadcast rights for both the Holiday Bowl, which previously aired on Fox, and the Poinsettia Bowl, which has been on a decade-long hiatus. Both games will be played at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
In total, The CW will air three bowl games this season, adding the Holiday and Poinsettia Bowls to the Arizona Bowl, which it will broadcast for the fourth consecutive season.
“The CW continues to build on our biggest college football season ever with the addition of the SDCCU Poinsettia Bowl and the Holiday Bowl,” Mike Perman, Senior Vice President, CW Sports, said in a press release. “Our broadcast of the Arizona Bowl has been a huge success over the last three seasons, and we look forward to collaborating alongside Sports San Diego to bring two more premier college football bowl games to a national audience.”
Rumors that The CW would secure the pair of bowl games date back to May, when Sports Business Journal first reported the possibility. Fox Sports opted not to renew the Holiday Bowl, which it has aired since 2017, in April.
The CW continues to expand its college football portfolio. This season, the network will broadcast ACC, Mountain West, and Pac-12 regular-season games in what has become a relatively full slate each Saturday. In addition to college football, The CW has also amassed a solid slate of men’s and women’s college basketball, the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, and WWE NXT.
