Bill Belichick spent the past year in an unfamiliar role, stepping away from coaching to become an NFL analyst. Fans saw a different side of him — more candid, more relaxed – but that chapter officially closed Wednesday night as he signed off from Inside the NFL for the final time.
Belichick joined Inside the NFL this season alongside Ryan Clark, Chris Long and Chad Johnson, where he was widely praised for his ability to break down film with the same meticulous approach that defined his 29-year coaching career. His insights, dry humor, and surprising comfort in front of the camera gave fans a fresh perspective on the legendary coach.
With the NFL season now over, the show wrapped up its final episode of the year by reflecting on Super Bowl LVIII. At the end of the broadcast, Belichick bid farewell, expressing his gratitude for the experience.
“Fellas, I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed being with you this year on Inside the NFL,” said Belichick. “This was a great year for me and I appreciate you welcoming me in.”
Clark, who had spent a second season with the show, returned the sentiment.
“Coach, it was amazing,” said Clark. “The second year being with you guys. I thought the show got better. The chemistry was amazing. We became friends. And coach, I just want to say, and I said this to a lot of people throughout the year, I respect you so much for continuing to be here each and every week, for showing up prepared, for doing your absolute best for the show with having so many other responsibilities.
“I think you taught me a lot about being a man of your word. So, I want to say thank you and best of luck as you head back to Chapel Hill.”
Long echoed the praise.
“Coach, thanks a lot; I want to echo the sentiments of what Ryan said,” said Long. “I mean, you didn’t have to do this the entire year. And you were a lot of fun, man, just like you were when you were coaching. I don’t think a lot of people realize that. You two made my day fun, never boring. Thanks for kicking my ass in football, and what a year, guys.”
Johnson kept it simple, telling Belichick it was “always a joy” to work with him — whether on the field or in the studio.
“Hey coach, obviously, you know how I feel about you. I appreciate you; we have been friends for a very long time. We had some great battles, and it’s good to be on the same team once again for once. Obviously, you coming in, being prepared always, being very insightful, allowing the people to see the other side of Belichick. This is the side I got to see, but now the world has got to see the personality, the fun side of you. It’s been a joy. It’s always been a joy anytime I have a chance to work with you.”

Only time will tell whether Belichick will potentially return to a role in sports media when his time at UNC is done. But he certainly changed much of the narrative that some fans had of him as a person throughout his illustrious coaching career.
