The beginning of the 2020s’ was earmarked by many as a transitional point in the world of men’s tennis.
Three icons of the game in Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were all approaching the end credits of their incredible careers and there looked to be no obvious next cabs off the rank.
However, fast forward just a few years and there are two very dominant forces at the sharp end of the men’s game in stoic Italian Jannik Sinner and Spanish firecracker, Carlos Alcaraz
With only Djokovic of the original ’big three’ still slugging it out on the ATP Tour, the changing of the guard over the past couple of seasons has been seismic.
Between them, Sinner and Alcaraz have won the last 8 Grand Slam singles titles available – dating back to Djokovic’s US Open triumph in 2023 and they are locked in a battle royale to be the number one ranked player in the world too.
2025 has been a huge year for both players, with Sinner winning Wimbledon and the Australian Open, while Alcaraz bagged the French and US Open(s) and both will be looking to end the season on a high.
China Calling
Such is the gap between Alcaraz and Sinner and the chasing pack, that most bookmakers are only taking bets on the Spaniard and the Italian to finish at the top of the world rankings come the end of the year.
There is very little to split the pair in terms of current odds on FIRST and other sportsbooks and the ebb and flow of their battle for world number one looks set to continue in China.
Alcaraz is the defending champion at the China Open in Beijing, but he will skip this one this time around, presenting Sinner with the chance to pick up some precious points.
While there are 500 points up for grabs in the Chinese capital, there are 1000 on the line in Shanghai the following week, which sees Sinner needing to defend his win there from last year.
Both tournaments are tracked keenly by fans and punters alike, with the ATP able to showcase its pull in Asia and with the showdown for year-end world number one on the line, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
All Eyes on Turin
The ATP World Tour finals is always a hotly contested affair, with the eight best players on the planet lining up to do battle.
Now held in Turin, the 2025 incarnation of the event looks set to be the final time Sinner and Alcaraz could clash this calendar year.
Once more, it was Sinner who reigned supreme in this event last season, asserting his dominance over the other top players on the planet but Alcaraz looks well placed to challenge this year, in pursuit of his maiden ATP World Tour Finals crown.
Both Sinner and Alcaraz look locked in for a period of sustained dominance at the very top of the men’s game and both will be doing all they can to finish 2025 in style.
