YouTube TV adds Apple TV compatibility prior to Olympics, while fuboTV adds 23 more NBC affiliates

Streaming services continue to add local markets and gain carriage on connected TVs. With more local stations and added access, the services bring more to the table for viewers who want to get rid of cable and go all-online. Two in particular have some news just in time for the Olympics.

YouTube TV is now available on Apple TV. The $35/month service has a bundle of over 40 channels, including networks from CBS, Fox, NBCUniversal, and the AMC networks, but not Turner. No longer requiring those using iOS to use AirPlay, Apple TV users can now download the YouTube app from the App Store and watch on that connected TV device.

The YouTube app will be available on the fourth-generation device and Apple TV 4K. However, YouTube TV still does not stream in 4K. The app is also available on Android TV, Chromecast, Roku, Samsung smart TVs, and Xbox One.

YouTube TV is available in about 80% of the country, and only becomes open in a certain market when it has agreements with at least three local network affiliates.

fuboTV has also ramped up its service prior to the Olympics. It recently added 23 NBC local affiliates, increasing its coverage from 51% to 70% of the country. fuboTV says it now has 187 local stations, including those from CBS, Fox, and NBC. Some of the markets added include Albuquerque, Atlanta, Buffalo, Charlotte, Cleveland, Denver, Honolulu, Louisville, Memphis, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Portland (OR & ME), and St. Louis.

The stations were added just in time for the Super Bowl and will continue to be beneficial given that the Olympics start on NBC in a matter of days. fuboTV has recently updated its Apple TV and Roku apps, and is also available on Chromecast, iOS, and Android devices, while it’s in beta on both Amazon Fire TV and the Fire TV stick.
