Many prominent former SB Nation and Banner Society writers have now set up shop at a new, free, donation-supported newsletter, Moon Crew.
Vox Media is only bringing back around 30 percent of the pool of furloughed employees that didn't take buyouts. The others, and some who weren't furloughed, have been caught in a new wave of layoffs.
It looks like Vox is set to announce that many of the writers it furloughed won't be coming back. That will have a significant impact on SB Nation and Banner Society.
SB Nation and Banner Society saw several further long-time employees leave permanently Friday.
Hall was one of the many SB Nation and Banner Society employees furloughed from May through July. He announced Tuesday he's taken a buyout.
Furloughed Banner Society staffers Spencer Hall, Jason Kirk, Richard Johnson, Alex Kirshner and Tyson Whiting have teamed up for an ebook "about the ever-desperate crusade to wrangle college sports, set in and around a time-travelin’, rootin’-tootin’, extra-demented American West."
The Vox cutbacks focus on "revenue areas where short-term demand will be lower," including sports.
The law has already led to Vox cutting California positions.
This move saw SB Nation criticized both by current contractors and by overall critics of their business model.
The post was labeled as satire, which isn't really much of an excuse in this case.
"Banner Society is an ongoing experiment with two goals. The first is to keep expanding, warping, and sharpening the conversation around college football in all its bizarre, corrupt, colorful elements. The second is to find new and different ways to connect with our audience directly, all over the internet."
Every Day Should Be Saturday was launched back in 2005, and moved to SB Nation in January 2010. Now, it's shutting down.
Ryan Nanni was previously named SB Nation's interim editor-in-chief after editor-in-chief Elena Bergeron left that role in February.
Bergeron was SB Nation's editor-in-chief from 2017 through her departure in March, 2019.
The plaintiffs' lawyers have sent a notice sent to "all current or former Site Managers and Managing Editors" since March 2015 asking if they want to join this class, with a response requested by June 3.
Bergeron had been SBN's editor-in-chief since March 2017.
SB Nation and Athletics Nation parted ways with Rainwater Thursday after her rant Wednesday. She responded on Facebook, claiming other people have been fabricating her tweets.
These cuts look like a response to Facebook's ever-shifting priorities.
