CBS’s Champions League coverage has drawn acclaim as some of the best and most entertaining sports television currently in operation today. Not only does CBS host legends of the global game as part of their crew who can give excellent technical analysis, but they are always willing to share in some laughs and hijinks together that are truly, legitimately funny. But during Wednesday’s semifinal coverage of this season’s tournament, CBS sent it up another level by sending Jamie Carragher in-person to Dortmund.

The Liverpool icon usually makes his home in the studio with Kate Abdo, Thierry Henry, and Micah Richards. But for the semifinal, he made the trip to Dortmund to be in the famed yellow wall as Borussia Dortmund played host to Paris Saint-Germain. And early on, it was apparent that Carragher and all the viewers along for the ride would be in for quite the memorable time.

After the game (and several pints), Carragher joined Peter Schmeichel for postgame interviews as the Dortmund fans celebrated a 1-0 win in the first leg in Germany. This interview with Dortmund star Jadon Sancho (on loan from Manchester United in his second stint with the club) was where things really began to take off, though.

From there, Carragher engaged in his usual banter with the studio back home, who teased him that Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero was doing a good enough job replacing him that he may be sent out on the road permanently. But the true highlight was Schmeichel acknowledging that they were making far too much commotion in the mixed zone area and disrupting interviews that were taking place around the world. You see, it’s just human nature that it’s hard to control your volume when you’re eight pints in.

And if that wasn’t enough, this photobomb after someone finally had enough common sense to take away a live microphone from him was the icing on top of Jamie Carragher’s booze-infused cake.

Not too many shows would be willing to send one of their lead analysts into an insane fan section, get him filled with several brewskis, and then bring him onto live television, but you have to give credit to CBS for pushing the boundaries to deliver an incredibly unique and entertaining show once again. And credit to Carragher for at least having enough of his wits about him to not make another joke about Kate Abdo’s fiance this time.
