Here’s a look at who’s televising and calling (where available) this week’s college football games, with some discussion of a featured game or games in each slot based on announcers, matchup, or both. All times are Eastern.

Thursday, Sept. 12 (all listings from 506 Sports)

Featured game: Arizona State @ Texas State

ESPN
Matt Barrie, Dan Mullen

The Sun Devils are 2-0 in their first Big 12 season so far, getting there thanks to wins over Wyoming and Mississippi State. That’s a step up from the 3-9 mark they posted in Kenny Dillingham (the first ASU alumnus to hold the head football job there)’s debut season last year. And speaking of alums, Barrie is a prominent ASU alum, donor, and fan. But the Bobcats are also 2-0 and making some noise under fellow sophomore coach G.J. Kinne, who led them to a 8-5 mark last year and brought in top QB Jordan McCloud from James Madison in the offseason, so they may make this a challenge for Arizona State.

Kansas State's Avery Johnson throws against UT-Martin.

Kansas State’s Avery Johnson throws against UT-Martin. (Scott Sewell/USA Today Sports.)This is the season’s first ranked-on-ranked clash seen on a Thursday or Friday night, and it’s the first college football beneficiary of the Fox broadcast network no longer airing WWE Smackdown Friday nights (it makes the move to USA this week, well before the initially-declared 2025 timeframe). Instead, Friday nights will become a general sports hub for broadcast Fox, and that starts with this clash of Wildcats between new Big 12 member Arizona and established one Kansas State.

Both Wildcats’ teams are off to a 2-0 start this year. Arizona beat New Mexico in a 61-39 track meet on Aug. 31, then took down Northern Arizona 22-10 last week. Meanwhile, Kansas State beat Tennessee-Martin 41-6 on Aug. 31, then narrowly survived to get a 34-27 road win at Tulane last week. But sophomore K-State QB Avery Johnson played well in that one, particularly down the stretch, finishing with 15 completions on 23 attempts for 183 yards and two touchdowns. We’ll see what he can do against Arizona.

Fox’s Big Noon Saturday gets a good one here, and from the Camp Randall stadium they prominently started the window from in 2017. The host Badgers may be unranked, but they’re 2-0 after wins over Western Michigan and South Dakota. Meanwhile, the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide get their biggest test of the season so far after wins over Western Kentucky and South Florida. If they do well, they can keep rolling, but if not, the honeymoon may be over for new head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Oregon’s Noah Whittington against Boise State on Sept. 7, 2024. (Ben Lonergan/The Register-Guard, via USA Today Sports.)

The rivalry formerly known as the Civil War will be played for the 128th time this year despite the Ducks decamping for the Big Ten (while the Beavers remained in the current two-team Pac-12, which is set to bring in four more teams for the 2026 season). However, it’s usually been played in November, and this will be the first time it’s played in September.

On the field, the Ducks have not been particularly impressive to date in their first Big Ten season, posting a 24-14 win over Idaho and a close 37-34 squeak by Boise State (one of those upcoming Pac-12 teams) last week. But they are 2-0, and still in the top 10, and this is a good opportunity for them to get another win before they hit conference play. Meanwhile, the Beavers are also 2-0 after a 38-15 win over Idaho State and a 21-0 shutout of San Diego State, and they’ll be looking to play spoiler in a significant Big Fox window (a difference from most of their home games, which will be on The CW).

Similarly to the former Civil War, this is the first time the Apple Cup will be played in September. This will be the 116th time the series is played, but it’s usually been in November. With Washington departing the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, though, that’s led to changes, and that includes this year’s game being a “neutral-site” one (Washington is also based in Seattle, but this is at the NFL’s Seahawks’ home of Lumen Field rather than the Huskies’ Husky Stadium).

On the field, new Huskies’ head coach Jedd Fisch (the former Arizona coach) has them 2-0 after emphatic wins over Weber State and Eastern Michigan. But there are still a lot of questions about this team; they made the national championship game last year, but weren’t ranked heading into this year after DeBoer and others left in the offseason. Meanwhile, the Cougars are 2-0 under third-year head coach Jake Dickert after wins over Portland State and Texas Tech, and they’ll look to keep doing well despite conference realignment questions. We’ll see what they can do against Washington.

This may not wind up being a huge deal, as the Bulldogs have been dominant through two weeks and the Wildcats have not (they’re 1-1 after an opening win over Southern Miss and then a 31-6 pummeling from South Carolina last week). But it’s notable to see Georgia facing a conference foe at this point, and doing so on the road. And Kentucky has been known for some upsets, especially under current head coach Mark Stoops (who’s in his 12th year there). We’ll see what the Wildcats can do against this impressive Bulldogs’ team.

Cal HC Justin Wilcox against Auburn.

This one is intriguing on a couple of levels. First, it’s the unusual but-now-more-common ACC After Dark, and featuring a 2-0 Golden Bears team that just upset Auburn on the road despite College GameDay unanimously picking against them.

But this is also interesting from the Aztecs’ side, especially around that aforementioned news they and three other schools will join the Pac-12 in 2026. New head coach Sean Lewis has them at 1-1 so far, with a 45-21 win over Texas A&M-Commerce but then the previously-noted 21-0 shutout from Oregon State. We’ll see what they can do against the Bears.
