The rise of Jomboy Media has been one of the industry’s greatest success stories of the last few years.

But recently, the baseball brand has found itself making headlines for less-than-positive reasons.

Earlier this week, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone took part in a heated interview with the outlet’s Talkin’ Yanks podcast. But that paled in comparison to the negative attention generated by a livestream, in which Jomboy producer Dan Rourke reacted to Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer scoring a run in his team’s 8-4 victory over the Yankees on Wednesday night.

“F*ck you Springer, kill yourself,” Rourke said on his Yankees Avenue livestream, which is unaffiliated with Jomboy Media. “Piece of s*it.”

The clip proceeded to go viral, as Jomboy Media isn’t only an established media entity, but one that recently announced a high profile partnership with Major League Baseball. During his own stream on Thursday, Jomboy founder Jimmy O’Brien addressed the situation, admitting the final fallout will ultimately be determined by MLB.

“I talked with Dan today… and he was feeling awful and I think he’s going to apologize and all of that,” O’Brien said. “He grew up in gaming culture, young kid culture — you talk s*it during livestreams. That’s no excuse to tell a player to go kill yourself. Joking, not joking, it’s like obviously you can’t say that and it’s terrible. And there might be ramifications from it. The league might call us and say, ‘hey, he’s not allowed here.’

“I explained to Dan, like, ‘dude, there’s one thing, like how we deal with this as a company internally and what it means for you and your work schedule and the media the next couple weeks. But there’s also bigger ramifications personally on a personal level. You just need to rid these phrases from your life everywhere, so they just won’t slip out.'”

Rourke’s comment was obviously regrettable and it sounds has taken ownership of the situation with him Jomboy colleagues. Still, it will be interesting to see if and how MLB opts to step in, especially with the comment coming on a personal live stream as opposed to a Jomboy platform.
