Tom Brady didn’t have his best night as a broadcaster calling Super Bowl LIX for Fox.
But the seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback still managed to leave New Orleans a winner thanks to the result of the Big Game.
At least that’s how Bill Simmons sees it when it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Discussing the Super Bowl on the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Ringer founder and guest “Cousin” Sal Iacono each noted the unique nature of Brady calling a game featuring the Chiefs in the midst of the emerging “GOAT” debate between the Fox analyst and Patrick Mahomes.
“Your boy was giddy too,” Iacono joked. ” think he went like three minutes without talking, Brady. He was just like giggling in the corner. Good for him.”
“Well that’s the thing: If it had been a Mahomes, his version of 28-3 with Brady announcing, that would’ve been great. Instead, this is probably the best moment of Brady’s career since he retired,” Simmons said. “Because it was a lot of, ‘Mahomes, Mahomes, Mahomes. Is he the GOAT? I don’t know. Well if he gets his three-peat, Brady’s never done that.’
“And now he goes down with two Super Bowl blowout losses. Brady had zero. Brady lost three times in the Super Bowl, all one score games where he had the ball on the last drive with a chance to like steal the game. Never got blown out. And then, and then he beat Mahomes twice — 2-0 in the playoffs. And it’s like, can we f**king settle down now for five years with the Mahomes GOAT stuff? Please. Thank you.”

As a diehard New England Patriots fan, Simmons is obviously biased, but he’s not necessarily wrong. While Brady was always going to have at least three more Super Bowl titles than Mahomes regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s game, the prospect of the Chiefs becoming the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles would have added a new wrinkle into a GOAT debate that only would have gained steam.
Instead, Mahomes leaves New Orleans with as many Super Bowl titles as he arrived with, with Brady’s legacy as the greatest quarterback to have ever played firmly secured. And considering that it will take at least four more seasons for Mahomes to match his ring total with the clock on a potential three-peat now reset, that seems to be a conversation that’s been shelved for at least the foreseeable future.
As for Brady’s current gig? That very much remains a work in progress.
