Ratings News and Notes

  • The NASCAR Monster Cup Series’ Bojangles’ Southern 500 from Darlington did not enjoy its return to cable. The Sep. 3 race on NBCSN drew 3.1 million viewers, down 48 percent from last year (Sep. 4, 2016: 5.92 million viewers) and down 33 percent from two years ago (Sep. 6, 2015: 4.64 million viewers) — both prior races had aired on NBC. It’s the least-watched race from Darlington since at least 1999.

    On the day prior (Sep. 2), NASCAR Xfinity Series’ Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200, also from Darlington on NBCSN (1.11 million viewers) also saw a decline from last year — down 28 percent (Sep. 3, 2016 on NBC: 1.542 million viewers).

    FS1 did not benefit either with its NASCAR event, the Camping World Truck Series race Chevrolet Silverado 250 from Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville (Ontario, Canada). On Sep. 3, it posted 493,000 viewers, down 27 percent from last year (Sep. 4, 2016: 672,000 viewers) and down 38 percent from two years ago (Aug. 30, 2015: 793,000 viewers).

  • F1 racing’s Italian Grand Prix on NBCSN Sep. 3 drew 508,000 viewers, up 9 percent from last year (Sep. 4, 2016: 467,000 viewers) and up 10 percent from two years ago (Sep. 6, 2015: 461,000 viewers).

  • IndyCar Series: Grand Prix at The Glen from Watkins Glen, N.Y. on NBCSN Sep. 3 registered 604,000 viewers, up 37 percent from last year (Sep. 4, 2016: 440,000 viewers).

  • The Woodward Stakes from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., as part of the Breeders Cup Challenge, on NBCSN Sep. 2 (258,000 viewers) showed increases of 70 percent from last year (Sep. 3, 2016: 152,000 viewers) and 58 percent from two years ago (Sep. 5, 2015: 163,000 viewers).

In total viewership for its entire week in Total Day (6 a.m. to 5:59 a.m.), NBCSN is up 128 percent (205,000 vs. 90,000) from one week earlier and up 123 percent (205,000 vs. 92,000) from the same week one year ago (August 29-September 4, 2016).
