Washington D.C. radio host Andy Pollin unceremoniously taken off the air after 34 years

Andy Pollin, who has been a fixture of Washington, D.C., sports radio for more than three decades, was suddenly taken off the air after his usual ESPN 630 morning show on Tuesday as part of layoffs at Cumulus Media.

According to a report from Gabe Hiatt at Axios D.C., the news came with extremely little warning. “As soon as it ended, the general manager came in and said that was it,” Pollin told Hiatt.

Pollin posted a heartfelt goodbye to his listeners over social media.

As I often say, “in this business, you don’t retire, they retire you.” Cumulus just did that to me. I’m open to opportunities, but sadly that’s unlikely at my stage of the game. I’m thankful for the last 7 years at 630 and look forward to what’s next

Pollin was a part of the launch of The Team 570, which would later become The Team 980, in 1992. There, he served as sports director until 2017 and became known for his work with Tony Kornheiser. He joined ESPN 630 in 2019.

The layoffs at Cumulus Media have affected shows across the country. Last week, Bay Area broadcaster Greg Papa was let go by KNBR, also owned by Cumulus Media, earning scorn from listeners. The entire radio industry has been impacted by scores of layoffs, with iHeartMedia also seeing cuts across the country, including its sports outlets.

Asked for his career highlights, Andy Pollin told Hiatt, “Everything about the last 34 years in D.C. in radio. I don’t think I could have asked for anything else.”
