Phil Simms is taking on a new role in NFL broadcasting: radio analyst.
The longtime NFL broadcaster appeared on Adam Schein’s SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio show Monday and revealed he’ll call this week’s Thursday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. He’ll join Ian Eagle in the Westwood One radio booth and said he’s “got a few of them coming down the road.”
“I’m going to do the game on radio this week,” Simms revealed on the Schein on Sports show (via Barrett Sports Media). “I’m really excited about that. The Cowboys and Giants on Thursday night. And once I study a little more, it’ll be interesting, some of my takes early in the game.”
Simms admitted to being a little apprehensive about his first radio gig.
“Well, I’m very fired up, but I’m a little nervous because I’ve never done radio before like that,” Simms said. “I know it’s short little bursts of talking, and I’m fine with that, too. I can make a point in seven seconds or five seconds, whatever they need. And as I said to a reporter once, ‘I’ve never heard anybody ever complained about somebody not talking enough.’”
The former NFL quarterback certainly knows the analyst role. He’s worked 30 years in that capacity with ESPN, NBC and most notably with CBS, where he worked in the network’s No. 1 booth for many years, then later joined the NFL Today. Simms and the show parted ways earlier this year.
When Schein told Simms he would love the new role, Simms revealed he would work on more games in the future.
“I got a few of them coming down the road, so I better like this one,” Simms said (via BSM). “Doing it with Ian’s going to really help me out a lot because I know he’s funny, he is off the cuff and I know him well, I’ve done a few games with him on TV and pre-season stuff like that. So, we’ve always had a good time.”
Schein shared his thoughts on X.
“This is going to be such a great listen,” Schein wrote. “Phil is fired up for game and to work with Ian. First time Simms has ever done a game on radio.”
