It would not be a surprise to see Pete Alonso re-sign as a free agent with the New York Mets, but it’s not a done deal.
It seems WFAN host Boomer Esiason is trying to will a reunion between the two into existence. And he wanted it to happen Friday.
Esiason fired off a short post on X Thursday night: “I’m feeling like Pete is a Met tomorrow,” he wrote.

That’s quite a prediction. While Alonso and the Mets have a mutual interest in him returning, the two sides seem to be far apart on money (the Mets are reportedly offering a three-year deal worth up to $70 million, according to The New York Post’s Joel Sherman). Yet Alonso has not found any takers elsewhere, and time is running out, with pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training in less than two weeks.
Esiason’s prediction on the timing of a possible Alonso-Mets contract announcement seemed oddly specific. Yet he defended his prediction Friday morning on the Boomer and Gio show.
“I’m thinking today is the day, and I’m thinking it’s probably gonna happen at 10:05 (a.m.). I just wanted to get out in front of it,” Esiason said (Boomer and Gio airs weekdays 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.).
“As a diehard Mets fan myself, I want the guy at first base and in the lineup. [Mets owner] Steve Cohen’s done a lot of great things for us since he’s taken over ownership of this team, and this will be another one, another nice little present, as I believe they’ll come to an agreement today.”
Producer Eddie Scozzare suggested Esiason had some inside info on a possible deal.
“You wouldn’t put it out there unless you knew,” Scozzare said.
Esiason denied he had a scoop.
“Yeah, I put it out there, and I stand by it, and if it doesn’t happen, you can call me a jackass, whatever you want,” Esiason said. “I want a full team, and I want him on this team. I’m telling you, this would be like Saquon Barkley leaving the Giants.”
Then, Esiason conceded he felt a deal might happen Friday because of “certain people that I have spoken to.”
“Listen, all the deducing I do … I’ve always been very interested in situations like this, and I love situations like this because it really is about people coming together and doing what I believe is the right thing,” Boomer said. “And given certain people that I have spoken to, it makes me feel like this is gonna be a really good day in Mets land. That’s how I feel today, and I hope by the time the day’s over, things get done. I’m very encouraged.”
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Friday that the Mets and Alonso are discussing an opt-out that would allow him to test free agency again after the 2025 season.
“It seems almost inevitable that a resolution will be reached,” Nightengale reported.
