Bay Area radio station clowned for AI-generated ‘fourth period’ in Sharks coverage

"I just want to declare: I think the Sharks have been one of the best fourth-period teams in the NHL lately."

Seeing a sports radio station get a basic fact wrong in their promotion of local sports coverage is bad enough; realizing the error came from AI makes it even worse.

On Thursday, Bay Area sports station 95.7 The Game posted a clip from their morning show on Facebook discussing the San Jose Sharks’ 4-3 comeback victory over the Anaheim Ducks. According to the caption, the Sharks’ comeback happened when they were “down by 2 goals in the fourth period,” which any hockey fan would tell you is impossible because there is no fourth period.

Adding to the confusion, the Sharks were never down by more than one goal in the game.

That garnered a reaction from KNBR host Adam Copeland, who took a screenshot and posted it to X, saying, “4th period….Do you guys even WATCH sports @957thegame?”

All’s fair in love and sports radio, but then Copeland returned with further intel that made the errors even more egregious.

“UPDATE on the @957thegame ‘4th Period’ SCANDAL: Sources from inside the Game say this was NOT a typo, they use AI to generate their captions (true story)…cuz that’s WAY better,” Copeland wrote, with a cry-laughing emoji. “This is a developing story. Tune into @KNBR for more updates.”

As recounted by Gabe Fernandez at SFGate, Copeland kept the good times going on Dirty Work, his KNBR show with Derek Papa, while discussing the game with Sharks TV broadcaster Brodie Brazil.

“I just want to declare: I think the Sharks have been one of the best fourth-period teams in the NHL lately,” Brazil said. “Copes was going in on them over there, huh? … Some things you gotta, you gotta hold ’em to a standard on. If we’re covering the Sharks on AI, I don’t know about that.”

Per SFGate, the Facebook post with the screenshot had been removed, but the clip was still up on their TikTok account with a different caption.
