Every so often in sports, there’s an interesting moment where an announcer calls a relative doing something notable on the court, field, or track. The latest case came in Round 5 of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship in Tampa Saturday. There, supercross legend James Stewart Jr. was the analyst on the call for his brother Malcolm’s first win in the premier 450SX class (in his 109th start in that class), which came in their hometown. Here’s a NBC clip showing off postrace moments, including Malcolm’s comments to play-by-play voice Leigh Diffey, James’ postrace interview with Malcolm (starting about 30 seconds in), and an interview with their father James Stewart Sr. (starting about 1:00 in):

There are some good lines in there, particularly from the James Jr./Malcolm interview. Here’s what Malcolm said there:
“Big bro, you know. You’ve done this a long time, racing Daytona and Jacksonville, and you know there’s something about that hometown crowd, buddy. I don’t know if they were twisting the throttle for me, because, for a split second, I was like, ‘Alright, I need to get this done.’ I was feeling really good, and you know what, Stewart is back in the whoops, Y’all!”
The 39-year-old James Jr. had an amazing supercross career, including two AMA Supercross 450cc championships, three AMA Motocross 450cc championships, 50 premier class Supercross race wins, and two 125cc AMA Supercross titles. He stopped racing in 2016, but started broadcasting the AMA Supercross and Motocross championships following their unification in 2022.
Meanwhile, Malcolm has been racing in the AMA Supercross and Motocross championships since 2011, and previously won the AMA Supercross 250cc East championship. And, with this win, he and James Jr. became the first brothers to win top-class AMA Supercross races. So that adds to how remarkable it was for James Jr. to be on the call here. And that adds to the history of family calls.
