ESPN frontman Stephen A. Smith has not shied away from political commentary in recent years.

His most recent remarks came this weekend on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher, where he doubled down on many of his prior criticisms about what he sees as the left’s failure to connect with everyday Americans.

Specifically, Smith thinks that voters had the perception that Donald Trump was “closer to normal than what we see on the left,” despite his two impeachments and 34 felony convictions.

“Here’s the deal,” Smith began. “The man was impeached twice. He was convicted on 34 felony counts. And the American people still said, ‘He’s closer to normal than what we see on the left.'”

His criticisms of the Democratic party did not stop there. Smith believes that a large reason why the party no longer occupies the White House is because they failed to keep their promises.

“You turn around and look at the left and you say, ‘What promises did you keep?’ …What resonated with the voter? What voter out there can look at the Democratic party at this moment in time and say, ‘There’s a voice for us. Somebody that speaks for us, that goes up on Capitol Hill and fights the fights that we want them fighting on our behalf.’ They didn’t do that, and that’s why their behinds are home and that man is back in the White House.”

It’s unclear if Smith has any ulterior motivations for sharing his political beliefs, other than trying to broaden his audience. In the days after the most recent presidential election, Smith appeared on The View and suggested he’d consider a run for president himself if he thought he had a legitimate shot.

Whether Stephen A. Smith simply wants to have a voice in politics, or sees politics as a future career opportunity, one thing is clear. It doesn’t seem like he’ll keep his political opinions to himself anytime soon.
