Golf clubs and television monitors don’t mix particularly well. In case anyone needed a reminder, Frank Nicotero, host of the Punch Lines with Frank Nicotero podcast, provided it.

Nicotero lined up in front of the desk with a golf club in his hand. Guest Matt Neverett, play-by-play voice for Triple A’s Las Vegas Aviators, called the “action.”

“Hey there, punchies,” Neverett said. “Nicotero, from 145 out, hitting out of the sand, two shots behind the leader.”

Nicotero was not really golfing. He was at a studio, not a golf course. There was no ball. But while he wasn’t really golfing, he was using a real golf club. And when he took the club back, it hit the monitor, instantly breaking it.

“And he breaks the desk,” Neverett said, staying in character.

“He broke the monitor,” a laughing co-host Ryan McCormick said.

“Exactly how he drew it up,” added Neverett.

Nicotero began to inspect the damage. At which point a still laughing McCormick yelled, “You’re making it worse.”

“This is live television folks,” Neverett, who by this point was struggling to contain his laughter, said. “That went from cheeky and fun to real serious real quick.”

Nicotero, trying to explain his thinking, returned to the desk. “I was just gonna do a half. Like a swing. I had to make it look real.”

“Why did you grab a wedge and not the putter,” McCormick asked.

“Oh, my God. The putter,” Nicotero replied.
