The Big Lead, a website which has been covering sports and sports media since its founding in 2006, is effectively no more.
On Thursday, Mark Stenberg of Adweek broke the news that has seemingly been inevitable for a while.
“Sports media company Minute Media—owner of The Players’ Tribune, FanSided and 90min—is making several changes to its portfolio designed to streamline its assets and rebuild Sports Illustrated after acquiring its licensing rights in March,” Stenberg said in his report. “Minute Media announced Thursday that it is rebranding FanNation to On SI. It also folded its sports media franchise, The Big Lead, into SI, according to chief marketing officer Andres Cardenas.”
Also on Thursday, The Big Lead’s editor-in-chief, Kyle Koster, shared a message on X (formerly Twitter) hinting that the end was coming for the website.
“The Big Lead is easily one of the greatest things to ever happen in my life,” Koster said. “It was a blank canvas and a direct line to people in this industry far too talented to care what we were doing but they did anyway. What incredible people and what an incredible run.”
