The National Women’s Soccer League’s North Carolina Courage announced Wednesday night they had terminated the contract of head coach Sean Nahas “effective immediately.”
Currently battling for the eighth and final playoff spot (a year after finishing fifth overall), the Courage (5-4-5) takes on the Houston Dynamo this weekend, and assistant coach Nathan Thackeray will serve as acting head coach.
“The North Carolina Courage remain focused on the continued development of the team and maintaining a professional, competitive environment for players, staff, and supporters,” the team said in a statement.
There was a thought that the team would share more details around the shock firing of their head coach during a Thursday press conference. However, their tight-lipped approach seemed to invite more questions than answers.
In that presser, Courage sporting director Ceri Bowley refused to provide much context for the move and seemed, at times, combative in response to questions about it. No specific reason for why Nahas was fired was provided.
Bowley repeatedly said there were a “multitude of factors” that went into the firing, but would not provide any further insight into what those factors were.
“The standards of this club are extremely high, and it was felt that there (were) reasons that we needed to make a change in order to uphold the standards that we expect of the North Carolina Courage,” Bowley said.
When Bowley was asked about Wednesday night’s press release, which seemed to imply there were reasons beyond performance for firing Nahas, Jake Levy, the club’s director of communications, stepped in.
“We’ve mentioned the multitude of factors several times,” Levy said. “I can have him (Bowley) say it again if you’d like, but there’s the multitude of factors, as Ceri said, that led to the decision, and that was reflected in the statement.”
The nature of the press conference certainly caught the attention of media members who cover the league and sport.

Watching the NC Courage presser re: the Sean Nahas firing and WOOF. I sure hope there’s a very, very good reason for the lack of transparency (i.e. player protection) and that more information is to come. Knowing this league’s history, the NWSL cannot abide by these vagaries.

“While it’s possible that there are legal reasons for why they can’t be transparent about the decision, maybe protecting players or otherwise needing to wait to reveal more, it was a very terse press conference, it was very defensive, it was aggresive towards the people asking questions that were very reasonable questions, particularly understanding the league and that team’s particular history,” added Sarah Spain in a video.
Spain is referring to an investigation in 2021 that led to the termination of then-head coach Paul Riley over accusations of sexual and emotional misconduct. Nahas replaced Riley, initially as an interim head coach, before eventually earning the position outright in December of that year.
About the only detail the Courage were able to confirm was that there was “no cause to say” Nahas’s absence for a June 8 match due to “unforeseen medical reasons” was related to his firing.
There may be reasons the Courage brass are being so tight-lipped about the situation, but you can be assured that every reporter who covers the team is working overtime to find out what’s going on. One way or another, the “multitude of factors” will come to light, whether the team wants that to happen or not.
