When it comes to the way it’s covered by mainstream sports media, the NHL is always trying to more attention. The league recently reached a deal with ESPN for a partial rights package that should help. But really, at the end of the day, it’s the little things that are going to help them the most.

Remembering that hockey players are human beings and not the animals or characters that their franchise is named for is a good start.

On Thursday, Lina Washington, a sports reporter for Sacramento’s ABC 10, was talking up the San Jose Sharks’ ongoing homestand, which was critical in their attempt to get back into playoff contention. As she discussed the NHL team’s predicament, what one might expect to be a highlight package of San Jose Sharks players was instead a highlight package of actual sharks in the ocean.

Not only was Washington a pro on the air, noting “this is not the sharks we are talking about but the Sharks did lose tonight,” but she then explained in a subsequent tweet exactly how the snark snafu happened.

Now we have concerned about how a similar situation might go down when the Seattle Kraken start playing.
