If you’re a fan of thinly veiled innuendo, then P.K. Subban’s joke in the NHL on ESPN studio on Wednesday night was right up your alley.

It started innocently enough. During the first intermission of Game 3 between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs, the camera showed Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel cutting his stick with a power saw ahead of Game 2 between the Golden Knights and Dallas Stars — the second game of ESPN’s doubleheader.

Mark Messier commented to Steve Levy that when he played, he had to use a hand saw and joked, “We’d have a lot of injuries if the guys I played with had power tools.” Levy and Messier talked about players cutting the stick themselves versus having an equipment manager do it. Subban had another joke in mind, though he didn’t come right out with it.

“I was gonna say something but I’m not gonna say it,” he said.

After some needling from Levy, who asked Subban, “Why don’t you say it now on TV?” Subban relented.

“I was gonna say, I’m not a carpenter, but I carry around a hammer,” Subban said.

Messier chuckled while Levy replied, “Yes, you do. So I’ve heard.” The laughter continued as the segment went on.
