New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu saved Malik Nabers and the New York Giants from a misattributed hot mic embarrassment Sunday afternoon.

The Giants lost their eighth straight game and fell to 2-11 on the season after losing to the Saints 14-11. Embarrassing. The Giants also had to watch an airplane flying over MetLife Stadium pulling a banner that read, “Mr. Mara, Enough – Plz fix this dumpster fire.” Embarrassing. And during the game broadcast on Fox, a hot mic caught a player yelling, “Y’all f****** calling plays like I ain’t out there!” Which depending on who said it, could have been really embarrassing.

Some fans on social media initially speculated the hot mic quote may have come from Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers. But after the game, Mathieu came to the defense of his fellow LSU alum and admitted that was his voice on the hot mic.

The quote makes a little more sense coming from Mathieu, who was essentially trash-talking the Giants by saying their offense shouldn’t be attempting to challenge him on the field. The quote would have been much more damning from Nabers. But considering the number of embarrassments the Giants have put themselves through this season, would anyone have been shocked if Nabers was caught calling his own team out on the field?

After last week’s loss, Nabers called the Giants “soft as f***” and had no problem being critical of their offensive game plan while speaking to reporters with a microphone in front of him. So, it’s not crazy to think he would be willing to similarly criticize their offensive game plan while on the field and without a microphone in front of him. But thanks to Mathieu, this was one instance where the Giants avoided an embarrassing controversy, in a season filled with embarrassments.
