The Jacksonville Jaguars had no issue taking care of the New England Patriots in Week 3, but not before a bizarre decision by quarterback Trevor Lawrence early in the fourth quarter left fans puzzled.

With nine minutes to go and his team up by more than three touchdowns, Lawrence broke free on a designed quarterback run. Rather than take the ball into the end zone himself, Lawrence suddenly took a knee at the 1-yard line. With far too much time left to run it out, the Jaguars scored on the very next play. New England took over with about eight minutes to go.

Lawrence’s choice to kneel was bizarre, and in the age of legal sports betting, fans took notice immediately. Between fantasy football, prop bets, and everything in between, Lawrence choosing not to score had financial implications for many.

Asked about the moment postgame, Lawrence addressed fantasy players directly.

“Hindsight, probably shoulda scored,” Lawrence told CBS’ Aditi Kinkhabwala, “because we scored on the very next play. Trying to run the clock out a little bit.”

“Trying to help support the Bhayshul Tuten fantasy people out there. So, got Bayshul that touchdown.”

Lawrence seemed a bit embarrassed by the silly move and maybe a little surprised by the question. Playing it off with humor was an understandable response.

But with so much toxic energy online these days surrounding athletes’ impact on bettors’ wallets, typically players are hesitant to make any mention of fantasy or gambling. Online, Lawrence’s comments drew angry responses from people who didn’t appreciate his joke that he went outside the normal rhythms of football to gift a teammate a score.
