On Monday’s opening night of Super Bowl Week, much of the conversation centered on the much-discussed officiating conspiracy theories related to the Kansas City Chiefs’ ongoing success.
Travis Kelce had some thoughts about the way NFL media members are pushing that story along.
Kelce spoke with reporters extensively on Monday night, discussing everything from the X’s and O’s of the upcoming game to Taylor Swift to his future in the NFL.
A child reporter asked Kelce what the one question he would want to ask the media if the roles were reversed was. The tight end did not hesitate, asking why the media has been “leaning into” the narrative that referees have had a bias in the Chiefs’ favor throughout the postseason.
“If I could ask the media one question. Uhm, why are you guys leaning into this whole ref thing?” asked Kelce. “You know what I mean. Why are you guys leaning into it?”

On one hand, all reporters are doing by asking players like Kelce about the officiating is putting them in an unfair position. But on the other hand, reporters are responsible for asking the tough questions that fans want answers to. And it’s undeniable that officiating concerns have been the most discussed topic around the team throughout the postseason.
Regardless of whether Kelce thinks that there is any legitimacy to the concerns ahead of Super Bowl LIX, all eyes will again be on the officials when the two teams take the field on Sunday. So don’t expect this conversation to stop anytime soon, especially if a questionable call ends up impacting the outcome of the Super Bowl.
