The Super Bowl is arguably the biggest single annual sporting event on the planet. It is the culmination of the National Football League season and the Super Bowl has provided us with many fantastic memories. Continue below as we bring you the top 5 greatest Super Bowls of all time.
Super Bowl XLII (2007)
This Super Bowl featured a New England Patriots team that went 18-0 and was aiming to become only the second team to complete an undefeated season in the NFL. The Patriots were on a run of 3 Super Bowl wins in six years and had Tom Brady, regarded by many as being the greatest quarterback of all time, in their team.
Their opponents, New York Giants, entered the playoffs that season with no expectations of winning the Super Bowl. However, it was Eli Manning, the Giants quarterback, who came away with the MVP award and led his team to one of the greatest upsets in the history of American sports. Manning completed 19 of 34 passes for 255 yards with two touchdowns and one interception to upstage Brady and the betting odds.
The bookmakers had the Patriots as clear favorites but it was the Giants who came out on top 17-14 in what was a special game. For those who had a wager on Super Bowl XLII, it was a thrilling night of action and nothing beats betting on the NFL with bet365. Super Bowl XIII (1979)
We go back to 1979 for our next great Super Bowl game and it was between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys. Interestingly, this was the first time a Super Bowl was a re-match of a previous one and the Cowboys were the defending champions. In terms of top players, this Super Bowl is difficult to beat and there were 26 future Hall of Famers involved. There was huge drama in the fourth quarter and a Lynn Swann touchdown handed the Steelers a 35-17 lead with less than 7 minutes to play. However, the Cowboys scored two touchdowns, one of which came with just 22 seconds to play but there was not enough time for a further score, meaning the Steelers won 35-31.
Super Bowl LII (2017)
We are back to more recent times for the third entry in our greatest Super Bowls of all-time list with Super Bowl LII. This game was between Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots and it was a shock to see The Eagles in the Super Bowl with backup quarterback Nick Foles at the helm. There is one play in particular that everyone remembers from this game, The Philly Special, which ended in a 1-yard touchdown pass to Foles to give the Eagles a 22-12 lead. Tom Brady threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to give the Patriots the lead with just over 9 minutes to play but Foles followed that with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz to give the Eagles Super Bowl glory.
Super Bowl XLIX (2015)
The Seattle Seahawks came into this Super Bowl as the defending champions and they were leading the New England Patriots 24-14 going into the final quarter of the game. It looked like the Seahawks had done enough to make history by winning back-to-back Super Bowls but Tom Brady and the Patriots had other ideas. With only 8 minutes remaining, Brady stepped up and delivered two touchdown passes, the second of which came with only 2:02 remaining on the clock to give the Patriots the lead. However, the Seahawks and their quarterback, Russell Wilson, were not done and they worked themselves to within 1 yard of the end zone. Then came the big shock. Rather than simply handing the ball off to running back Marshawn Lynch, who had a touchdown and 24 carries for 102 yards in the game, they decided to try something different with just 26 seconds remaining. Instead, the Seahawks released a quick pass to Ricardo Lockette on an inside slant but it was read by Malcolm Butler, who ended the game with the Patriots 28-24 to the good.
Super Bowl XXV (1991)
Finally in our rundown of the top 5 greatest Super Bowls of all time, we come to Super Bowl XXV. This game was between AFC champion Buffalo Bills and the NFC champion New York Giants at Tampa Stadium. The Bills looked fantastic for much of the season and delivered a crushing 51-3 victory over Las Vegas Raiders in the AFC Championship game. However, the Giants had a plan to stop the Bills and it involved keeping the ball out of the hands of the Bills players for as long as possible. To do that, the Giants operated a run-based offense and when defending, the Patriots hit the Bills hard, causing maximum disruption to their passing plays. As a result, it was a tight game and it all came down to a field goal attempt by Bills kicker Scott Norwood, who missed with 8 seconds left on the clock.
