New York Giants fans spent days wondering whether Jaxson Dart would be “okay” or miss the entire season with knee surgery, and Tiki Barber is sick of the speculation.
It might not be the result they expected or hoped for, but Giants fans at least have closure on Dart, with reports that he will undergo season-ending knee surgery after exiting Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams in the first quarter. Tiki Barber might even be willing to address the Giants’ quarterback situation now that we know Dart’s fate. But before getting confirmation that Dart would undergo surgery, Barber had no interest in speculating.

“Jaxson Dart, from a player standpoint, is irrelevant right now. I know it’s a great talking point,” Barber ranted on his Wednesday morning WFAN radio show with Evan Roberts and Shaun Morash. “For the next three hours, I’m gonna let you speculate on that.”
Roberts pushed back, saying Giants fans wanted answers amid varying reports claiming Dart was going to be “okay,” he might miss only four weeks, or he might need season-ending surgery.
“Speculation is nothing. There’s no substance in it,” Barber continued. “You could talk about this at nauseam, and it’s just gonna drive you crazy; you’re gonna run in circles; you’re a cat chasing your own damn tail. And eventually, you’re gonna catch it and eat it, and you’re gonna be like, ‘Dude, what am I doing? I’m killing myself!’ I can’t, as a guy who played this sport, now sit and obsess – because these guys are listening to this stuff – sit and obsess about somebody who’s not available for me Sunday.”
Barber gave a truly boring take, but at least he delivered it with some passion and pizzazz. Because if you can’t speculate on sports radio, where can you speculate? Sports radio was built on hosts and fans speculating. You speculate about how good a team or player is; you speculate about who will win a game; you speculate about what trades will or should be made. And when a team is silent on a player’s injury, fans can only speculate.
“We can talk about this all you want,” Barber continued. “You guys might hear me check out. Because I don’t give a you know what… I know he’s not playing this month. So all I care about is who is. Availability is the only thing that matters.”
Availability might be the only thing that matters to NFL teams. But it’s much lower on the depth chart for sports radio topics. Aaron Rodgers played four snaps for the New York Jets in 2023. Fans and media still discussed him as much as any Jets player that season.
And now that Giants fans know Dart is out for the season, speculation won’t end. Fans are still going to speculate about Jameis Winston, they’re going to speculate about the Giants trading for a quarterback, and if losses begin to mount, they’re even going to speculate about whether John Harbaugh might want to pick his own quarterback in the next draft. Sports radio doesn’t work without speculation.
