Commanders lineman Sam Cosmi calls back Stefon Diggs joke in welcoming new teammate

Stefon Diggs signed on for a one-year deal with the Commanders on Wednesday, giving quarterback Jayden Daniels another solid weapon as Washington looks to return to the heights they reached in 2024.

Offensive lineman Sam Cosmi decided to welcome his new teammate to the squad by bringing back an old joke that has followed Diggs since his time with the Vikings.

Asked for his first impressions of Diggs, Cosmi said, “He’s a heck of a ballplayer. From a perspective of media, I wouldn’t let him date my sister. I don’t know where that came from in the locker room, so we’ll see if that’s a true thing.”

Cosmi’s comment calls back to a viral video that made Diggs infamous in his early seasons with the Vikings. Several players in the Minnesota locker room were asked which teammate they wouldn’t want dating their sister, and Diggs was the immediate answer for many.

Diggs had a good attitude about the initial video. “Nobody wants me to date their sister?” Diggs asked when he was informed that his name had been floated. “I’m a great guy! I’m actually a great guy. They just don’t know me well enough.”

At least Cosmi seems open to learning about his new teammate before making any final judgments. For the time being, the question might be mostly moot, as Diggs has a child with rapper Cardi B, and the two appear to have an on-again, off-again relationship of sorts. When Diggs was asked about their relationship status as of June, he responded, “You have to ask her.”
