Does interim coach Jeff Ulbrich have a chance of becoming the full-time head coach of the New York Jets when the season is over? Mike Francesa doesn’t think so.
The Jets fell to the New England Patriots 25-22 in Sunday’s Week 8 game. It was a brutal loss for a team that was already struggling. The loss moved the Jets to 2-6 on the season and 0-3 since firing Robert Saleh, a move Francesa supported, even if he didn’t think it would happen. Saleh was replaced with Ulbrich. While it wouldn’t be unprecedented for a coach to do well enough in the interim role that he’s offered the full-time job, Ulbrich is off to what can best be described as a shaky start.
And after Sunday’s loss, Francesa made it known that Ulbrich has no chance of coaching the Jets after the 2024 season.
“This defensive coordinator, who has now become an interim head coach has a better chance to become President than he does to be a head coach next year. I have a better chance to be an astronaut than this guy has to be a head coach in the future. He is worse than Saleh.”

It is entertaining to think about what Francesa would say if, for example, he became the first human to step foot on Mars. From that perspective, maybe we should all be pulling for Ulbrich to turn things around.
Francesa started the postgame edition of the Mike Francesa Podcast by calling the loss an “all-time Jet debacle,” which covers some serious ground.
He also said, “This will probably be the last time I talk about the Jets this year.” Somehow, though, we imagine we’ll get at least a few more good Francesa rants about Gang Green.
